Everyone knows what an email address is, right?

Main Post:

I know sysadmins (especially those who've had to herd MTAs and not just MUAs) will score high or even perfect on this quiz, so I figured I would pass it along.

I scored 18/21 though, not sure how these are valid email addresses, and the quiz doesn't offer what RFC and where affirms or refutes each example:

  • maybe-like-this @example.com (leading/trailing space for local part is fine?)
  • fed-up-yet@ example.com (leading/trailing space for domain part is fine?)
  • ""@example.com (empty local part should be invalid, but escaping it makes it fine?)

Top Comment: like the first comment in that thread, RFCs don't matter in this context. What Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo accept is all that matters in 2025

My email is 25 years old, I need some advice!

Main Post:

Hi, I have a few questions and thought this was the best place to ask...

I've had the same hotmail address for 25 years. I now get a lot of spam, it's very annoying but manageable. I've checked and the email has been in various breaches over this time, which worries me a bit.

I also use this email for my Google account, even though it's a hotmail email. I use Google mostly for Calendar, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Keep, and Tasks. I need all these really

I am also on an android phone and use my Google account for that. I use a Mac for my main work computer

I'd like to start again, and have a new email, or multiple? After asking AI, it said that data brokers can still link my identity using IP and other info, even if I get a new email. Is there any way to avoid this without a lot of hassle? I don't want to change everything only to end up in the same situation

I use a password manager currently for my passwords, and 2fa codes with a different app

So to summarise my questions -

  1. Is it worth getting a new email? If so, what...proton mail? What about my Google needs
  2. Should I have multiple emails, one for really important stuff - money related etc. and another for personal, and another for signing up to things I don't quite trust with my data?
  3. How can I avoid my new email being linked to my identity and getting loads of spam etc
  4. I would ideally like to use my full name in my new email, is this a bad idea?

Any general tips would be great, I'm a bit lost with it! Thank you very much

Top Comment: Personally, I'm using Proton Mail with email aliases. Here's how to do it. Get an aliasing service. Some free ones include: DuckDuckGo Email Protection SimpleLogin MailGW Proton Pass The idea here is that if you never give out your "real" Proton email, you'll never get spam. And if you use a unique alias for everything then they can't connect your accounts through the emails.

I've had this email but when I redeem it only gives me a month?

Main Post:

I've never signed up to Horizon+ and I get this email and thing okay 3 months is worth a play but if I click Redeem and choose a subscription it only actually gives me a month.

Anyone else had this? I'm in the UK if that makes a difference.

Top Comment: it looks like to me the offer expires in september, not the Horizon+. That's just how I'm reading it though, I'm mainly engaging with this post so hopefully more experienced Meta users will see this and be able to help

Are there any free email providers anymore?

Main Post:

Old man yells at sky, I remember even 10-15 years ago, you could just get a simple email without having to give your phone number or pay. Then yahoo started the cancerous trend of asking for phone number, and the rest is history.

The only email provider I've found that doesn't require phone or payment is protonmail, but they ban you if you use their emails to sign up for too many things so I'd rather not (not that I spam sign ups, but I have a few different accounts for various platforms is all). Google requires phone number.

Any others?

Thanks!

Top Comment: Why not use one Proton Mail account with aliases from Simple Login or Addy or Firefox Relay?

Best free email providers?

Main Post:

Hi there r/emailprivacy.
For context, I've used the popular ones, Gmail, Outlook, Aol, etc...
I've been testing for a while just trying to find something reliable and that isn't as tedious as another.
Recently started using Mail.com, though after putting a password in exactly as I remembered entering it and then encountering trouble getting in this morning, I've kinda been wondering.

I have heard numerous complaints saying that Mail.com is sometimes super unreliable, and that it's easy for someone to get access to, but I wanna hear some suggestions from others.
